Bio / Abstract

The SPE Student Chapter organized an educational field trip to the Troodos UNESCO Global Geopark, led by Dr. Vasilis Symeou (PhD) from the Cyprus Geological Survey Department. Students explored one of the world’s most complete and well-preserved ophiolite sequences, gaining practical insight into the geological processes that shaped Cyprus.

The visit included the Troodos Visitors Center, where students learned about the island’s geological evolution, its copper and asbestos mining history, and early industrial applications. Field stops covered significant geosites such as the Amiantos Fault, sheeted dyke complexes, upper and lower pillow lavas, and the historic Skouriotissa mine.

Through this hands-on experience, students connected classroom theory with real-world geological formations, deepening their understanding of tectonics, volcanism, and the geological foundations essential for petroleum engineering.
