Bio/Abstract
This technical field trip, arranged by the SPE University of Nicosia Student Chapter, provided an in-depth look at Cyprus’s marine environmental protection framework and oil spill response capabilities. The visit emphasized VTS’s role as the nation’s sole provider of a fully integrated oil spill response service, operating throughout the Eastern Mediterranean in compliance with IMO requirements, ISGOTT standards, and internationally recognized ISO certifications.
The program included a technical briefing on response strategies, safety protocols, and operational readiness, followed by hands-on demonstrations of key spill response equipment, including oil containment booms and recovery skimmers. The experience concluded with a guided tour of the VTS KERYNEIA tugboat, offering a behind-the-scenes view of the systems and operations of a dedicated antipollution response vessel.
