Bio / Abstract
The SPE University of Nicosia, in collaboration with Pontem Analytics, organized an interactive live interview on Carbon Capture & Storage (CCS), moderated by Chapter President George William Vasey and Chapter VP Grace Allam. The session featured Dr. Vassilis Gaganis (NTUA) and Dr. Ernestos Sarris (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki), who provided expert insights into the technical, regulatory, and geopolitical aspects of CCS in Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.
Topics discussed included long-term CO₂ monitoring, structural integrity of reservoirs and caprocks, funding and scalability challenges for European CCS projects, interactions with hydrogen development, Greece’s evolving role in regional decarbonization, and Cyprus’s potential for CO₂ storage. The session offered students and attendees a unique opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of advanced energy transition strategies and the practical application of CCS technologies in the region.
Through this event, the SPE Student Chapter strengthened its engagement with industry leaders, raised awareness of emerging low-carbon technologies, and demonstrated the impact of student-led initiatives in shaping discussions on sustainable energy solutions.
