Bio / Abstract
The SPE University of Nicosia Student Chapter had the opportunity to tour IESC Innovating Environmental Solutions Center Ltd, the sole licensed hazardous waste management facility in Cyprus. Under the guidance of Mr. Costas Varavvas, students explored IESC’s comprehensive services for managing drilling waste, including treatment of cuttings, sludges, and drilling fluids across the Southeast Mediterranean.
The tour showcased advanced technologies such as the Thermal Cuttings Cleaner (TCC) for oil recovery from drilling waste, centrifugation systems, and physiochemical treatment lines. Participants also observed actual drilling fluid from the Elektra Well (Block 10) and saw the original drill bit used by ExxonMobil during the discovery of Glaucus, offering a rare hands-on experience.
This visit provided students with a unique opportunity to witness real-world applications of environmental and drilling waste management, bridging academic learning with industry practice. The field trip emphasized sustainable solutions in the petroleum sector while fostering engagement with industry experts and professionals.
