Abstract
Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) considerations are increasingly central to the petroleum industry. Compliance with ESG standards has become a prerequisite for funding from shareholders and banks, and recent European Union initiatives are translating these standards into formal regulation. Despite this, ESG is often surrounded by complex jargon, extensive metrics, and politicized debates.
This lecture traces the evolution of ESG from the industrial revolution to the present and demonstrates why it is here to stay. It identifies key long-term ESG trends and uses them to anticipate future developments. Capital markets have largely converged on a small set of industry standards, which are risk- and value-based, project-focused, and widely accepted by major financial institutions. While these standards can be demanding, they provide a level playing field and are readily integrated into existing business processes.
ESG compliance is shifting from auditing policies and manuals to assessing actual implementation in the field. As a result, petroleum engineers, project managers, and operations managers are now integral to ESG compliance. The lecture will use case studies to illustrate the essential ESG knowledge and practices required for effective field-level implementation.
Biography
Christiaan Luca holds an MSc in Petroleum Engineering from Delft University, the Netherlands. Over his 32-year career with Shell, he held various petroleum engineering roles—including drilling, reservoir engineering, project planning, and economics—while developing oil and gas fields in Thailand, Syria, Gabon, and Nigeria. Upon returning to Shell’s corporate offices in the Netherlands, he assumed management roles in technology, business strategy, and planning, and was closely involved with externally challenged programs in CCS and Rigs-to-Reefs. Until the end of 2016, Christiaan led Shell’s global practice in non-technical risk management. He now works as an independent trainer, assessor, and coach in ESG and risk management.
